Anyone know of a cheap source for soup and beef bones, shank, chuck?

We have an Asian Market here that has inexpensive ingredients such as those.

That looks really good, Jimmy!

We worked in the house all day.....again. I'm so tired. At least I get to sleep in my own bed tonight instead of our guest bed that was IN our master bedroom. The mattress isn't bad, but it's not as comfortable as our bed. I was really glad I had the forethought to have my sheets all freshly washed and folded and sealed in a big zip loc bag, ready to go.

Dane got done with all the painting and touch-ups. He did a really nice job. He did an especially nice job on some drywall repair that the contractor's drywall guy left in a mess.....wavy and lumpy walls drive me nuts.

So, supper was out of the freezer ~ bean soup for him and chili for me, eaten when each of us got hungry.

I forgot about an Asian market. I will have to go in and see what they have. I did go to a hispanic market. It was much nicer than the hole-in-the-wall markets with the cluster of fruit flies out front that I was used too. This market was large, had its' own cafe, made tamales, tortillas, grilled meats and had a hot table with various dishes. Their kitchen was behind glass and I watched them make salsas in industrial sized machines. Their meat was fairly reasonable too. Select grade 7-bone steaks for $2.69/lb, bones/$1.69/lb, shank/$2.69/lb, neck bones and meat. I bought 6 lbs of various cuts and made some beef stock yesterday. I had to do it outside under an umbrella in the rain. Joe hates the house to fill up with the smell. I am going to concentrate the stock today and freeze it. I will use some supplimented with canned stock or Better Than Bouillon for my French Onion soups.
I saw meats I haven't seen in years: beef cheeks, chicken feet, beef tongue. The labels were all in Spanish but fortunately, in small print, was the english version. I will definitely go back.

There's a Hispanic market about half a mile from here. It sounds a lot like yours. It's one of the highest ranked markets for authentic cooked Mexican food in the area. I go there when I need an ingredient that I'm not likely to find at a grocery store and when I need lamb for kabobs. (Chislic) it's nearly impossible to get lamb around here from anywhere else except at Easter.

I broke down the package of twin pork tenderloins today. I ended up with two 12 oz. trimmed & tied tenderloins and 12 oz. of cut pork for stir fry or sweet & sour pork.

Neighbor Jim stopped by today and I told him I was making pork tenderloin for supper and to show up at the usual time. It makes me feel good to be sure he's getting healthy meals and not having to go out every night, although he does go out every day for breakfast.

I put some of the bottled Korean BBQ sauce on the seared pork and then finished it in the oven. I made a baked sweet potato for Dane & me to split and Jim got a small baked white potato. I had a bunch of red beets so I cooked the stems/leaves and served the red beets separate. I can never remember if Jim likes stuff like the beet greens or not.

I took the day off and ran around with Lyn & Barb all day ~ it felt like I was stealing a day off from work! Tomorrow we have the monthly breakfast for the neighborhood and then, immediately after, I have to take Ana (from Brazil) to The Florida National Cemetery to attend services for her friend who passed away in December. He had no family and she's known him for years, tended to him when he was sick and with him when he passed. So, she'll follow through with her promise to see he's laid to rest in the military cemetery. I tried to explain some of the ceremony, especially how they will present her with his folded flag. It's always such a touching ceremony to attend.

Tonight I grilled some burgers on the charcoal grill. I just heated up the leftover butternut squash and beet greens as sides.

We had ribeye cap steak again.  I have tried it a few different ways now and I think I am on the right track this time.  I'll refine my approach a little more next time. First I tried finishing it in the oven and that worked out well but took over 20 minutes.  The next few times I tired sous vide then finishing it on the stove.  That took over two hours and did not impress me at all.  Somehow "perfectly cooked" isn't very exciting.  This time I cut off the string, unrolled it and trimmed it so all the pieces were fairly uniform.  It turned out very well but I can tell that I need to trim it up a little more.February 2020 - Page 4 20200212

No matter how you cut it, it's still a pretty tasty hunk-O-beef!

I am not familiar with a cap end steak but it still looks mighty tasty Norm.

I was in Walmart this morning and saw several Asians walking around with face masks on. They are afraid of catching the coronavirus. We do have cases here in CA and an airbase and hour from here has or had some people quarantined, but it isn't spreading like in China. The US has done a pretty good job keeping the virus at bay. If it does become an epidemic here, I guess i will load up on groceries and not leave the house if possible.

Joe had a leftover steak sandwich. I tried a new recipe for clam chowder from Serious Eats but it was awful and i poured it down the sink. I guess I will scramble some eggs.

I ordered some sweet n' crunchy peanuts from Amazon. Got my cans today and gave one to Katie. She ate the whole can in one sitting. GOOG! I get sick just thinking about it.

Ribeye cap steak is the top of a standing rib roast, cut off and tied in a roll.

Thanks Norm! Does it have a lot of fat? What is the cost compared to a roast?

It is well marbled so it is fatty and it is expensive. Two usually cost in excess or $50.00. I think they made a mistake on pricing these though. They were with regular ribeye steaks and priced the same as them which is half the price.

Tina found two nice female eggplants.
I fried them in flour / egg / and cracker meal. Nice and slow.
Only a few seeds on the ends. They were not bitter either.

Beautiful fry on the eggplant! You coated them so evenly. When I first glanced at the pic I thought you had made English muffins. LOL (although English muffins covered in sauce & cheese ain't a bad idea.....)

How can you tell the difference between a male & female eggplant? Other than the female one is so chatty......
