There is one place I think is called Thermal,CA that is right in the middle of the Mojave desert which has the highest temps in the US. It is a big foreign tourist destination. Periodically I read about some idiot that dies out there because they ignore the warnings. It gets so hot that your tires can melt. From what I understand, there is a hotel out there where the employees also live because it is too far away to commute and too hot.
In the summertime, you can still freeze your backside off in Carmel. It is cold and damp. We went up there one August for the Pebble Beach car show and I thought I would freeze to death. We had the fireplace and heater going in our cabin. Go inland 10 miles and it is sunny, dry and hot.
Lived in CA for 2 years..hated it except for the weather.
