My cat use to do similar when confronted with water on the floor. I guess he thought if he looked over the puddle he could figure out how to get from point A to point B without getting his paws wet.
Wet paws = HOURS of licking and grooming! Hahahahaha!

One of Charlies cats often drinks water by dipping her paw in the bowl then licking it off.

Oh Gosh! That is funny.
Our three cats are inside only cats, and I open the back door to the deck for them to venture to test the snow. They look / sniff / and run right back in, and especially if the wind fluffs their fur.
