UNCLE JIMMY

UNCLE JIMMY

Got a Call from Evelyn Today!
She asked if I could add this e-mail because she is overwhelmed with getting things back to normal in Long Island at her Home.
Tina and I say she is a Miracle Cancer Survivor.

She had asked about all on the forum, and cannot wait to get back to some normalcy soon. She will visit when she feels stronger.

From Evelyn:

Dear Family and Friends,
     The words to this song are dedicated to you for all your prayers, well wishes, encouraging words, emails, phone calls, and cards that have kept me going for so long with this cancer. I was diagnosed as Stage 3 in February of 2009 and have only been able to come this far because of your support and love.
I am truly blessed. I say my prayers at night thanking God for letting me get this far. I welcome every new day he gives me.
    I just finished my 6th round of double chemo (Alimta and Carboplatin) on the 17th of October, 2013 with hardly any serious side effects....mostly low blood counts that required a couple of transfusions and gave me extreme fatigue.My mind thinks I am 21 yet and it is hard for me to not try to do the things I did at that age!. My oncologist is amazed that I have come through this so "easily" compared to many others...esp. with my diabetes and kidney problems. I see him on the 21st and will  have a PET/CT  about three weeks after that.
    The plan is to go on a maintenance dose of just one of the chemos (Alimta) every three weeks. With most patients, they get this 6 to 9 months before it doesn't work any more and the cancer regrows and multiplies. Hopefully, I will be able to take it longer. Here I am at Stage 4 for two years this month as per the oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering in Commack who told me three times on Oct. 27th, 2011 that I was Stage 4 and TERMINAL. Nationwide, once diagnosed with this particular cancer at Stage 4, only 10% make it to 12 months. This is my 24th month! Dr. Chu, at North Shore Hematology/Oncology, who I now see, and I think it is because for years I have been living on many supplements that have probably kept my 71 years in better shape than most people my age. I never smoked and hardly drink. I thank God for giving me a good brain so I can continually research new drugs with Suzanne sending me all info she gets from her medical sites. So, hopefully, the maintenance chemo will work longer than 6 to 9 months. I am not giving up. There are so many worse off than I am. My father's words are ALWAYS in my mind:
                                 I cried because I had no shoes
                                 Until I saw a man who had no feet.
    Driving home tonight, I carefully listened to these words of this familiar song and the tears came down as it reminded me of all of you (and, of course, God) and I knew I just had to share my feelings with you. It starts off with an ad but click the words SKIP AD when it appears in the lower right hand corner. Then it begins as an instrumental and shortly the words appear with Josh Groban singing. The words and the pictures are so beautiful. I hope you enjoy it. The words remind me of you.
    Again, thank you for being such a wonderful blessing in my life. I couldn't have come this far without you all.
                                                  Love, thoughts, prayers and great big thank yous,
                                                  Evelyn

[font=Comic Sans MS]I don't know if this post is going to work, but it was very interesting.

G Grandma Evelyn ( Most of us remember her as "eread" on the old C.Com Site.

She is doing very well. She had her 6th round of Chemo tuesday, and for a woman with stage 4 lung Cancer, she is feeling great.
She will be going for CT scans next week, and is anxious to see if the Gancer tuners had increased or at least ceased to grow in size.

She asked me to pass on the supplement regimen she follows...and actually, the basic use of Apple Cider Vinegar as explained.
Now... Evelyn is a diabetic, and has learned to control it, and fix it quickly as with a severe diabetic, it can get out of hand sometimes, and especially with sickness, and taking other medications like Chemo Drugs for cancer.

I told her, she should write a book on Diabetic glucose control.

Anyway..... I am going to attach the e-mail (Quite Lengthy, and superbly written by her). The stuff is very interesting, and I am going to give that Vinegar a try for weight control, and other good it may help me with.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
E-Mail from Evelyn Read  07/ May / 2014
Basically…. The Vinegar use is something she said to pass on to others. For Diabetic control it seems to work wonders for her, and she has been a diabetic for years now.
2 ½ years battling stage 4 lung cancer, and wearing a colostomy bag for 12 years, and walking with a walker to assist her, is in alone a task that proves she is a fighter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am sending a separate email about my HbA1c results from Monday's (May 5, 2014) testing so she can see how low they have dropped with some of what I am taking below. I have not changed my diet or eating habits or "exercise" (mine is done walking up and down supermarket aisles at a fast clip! LOL! )Thanks!
   My glucose is in good control. I am 72 and have been a diabetic since my 30's....almost 40 years. You may want to pass this info along to any diabetics you know. I am willing to talk to them if they wish.
   I am ahead with the survival statistics for this "Stage 4-Terminal" cancer news I received Oct. 27th, 2011...now 2 1/2+ years. I usually order from Puritan's Pride with a Buy 1-Get 2 Free offer and search the internet for a free shipping code worth about $5. Swanson also has reasonable prices.
    I have since added mushroom extracts from 3 mushrooms and have added one more mushroom (Cordyceps) to that. I have listed below all four I am now taking.
    Note that cancer loves both an acidic environment and one high in glucose. Therefore, many of the supplements I take help to control glucose...esp. since I am a diabetic. I am on a prescription for the Sodium Bicarbonate...650 mg. twice a day.
    Always check with your doctor before taking any of these supplements.

Alpha Lipoic Acid- 600 mg 1 X a.m.
    Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) serves a variety of important functions in the body, one of which is the ability to help metabolizeSUGAR, especially in muscles, where it promotes energy.
    ALA is also beneficial for LIVER health, and helps to revitalize the underlying structure of the SKIN so it can look healthier and more radiant.**
    ALA is often called the "universal antioxidant" for its ability to help NEUTRALIZE CELL-DAMAGING FREE RADICALS in both the water-soluble and fat-soluble compartments in the cell.Somehow I think this was to help the damage done to cells from cancer, radiation and chemo.
********************************************************************
Apple Cider Vinegar-1 Tbs. with each meal I take 1 tbs. diluted in a glass of iced tea (or juice or water) with every meal when  carbs are consumed. From a diabetic site, d-Life: The biologically active constituent of vinegar is acetic acid, also the source of the liquid's lip-puckering pungency. Nobumasa Ogawa, Ph.D., of Tokyo University in Tokyo, discovered that the acetic acid inhibits the activity of severalcarbohydrate-digesting enzymes, including amylase, sucrase, maltase, and lactase. As a result, when vinegar is present in the intestines, some sugars and starches temporarily pass through without being digested, so they have less of an impact on blood sugar.
Cancer loves glucose so keeping glucose levels low is important. Supplements to help lower glucose are included on my list to fight cancer in the long run.
Scientific Evidence of Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits
But there are some medical uses of vinegar that do have promise, at least according to a few studies. Here's a rundown of some more recent ones.
Diabetes. The effect of vinegar on blood sugar levels is perhaps the best researched and the most promising of apple cider vinegar's possible health benefits. Several studies have found that vinegar may help lower glucose levels. For instance, a 2007 study of 11 people with type 2 diabetes found that taking two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed lowered glucose levels in the morning by 4%-6%.
High cholesterol . A 2006 study showed evidence that vinegar could lower cholesterol. However, the study was done in rats, so it's too early to know how it might work in people.
Blood pressureand heart health. Another study in rats found that vinegar could lower high blood pressure. A large observational study also found that people who ate oil and vinegar dressing on salads five to six times a week had lower rates ofheart disease than people who didn't. However, it's far from clear that the vinegar was the reason.
Cancer . A few laboratory studies have found that vinegar may be able to kill cancer cells or slow their growth. Observational studies of people have been confusing. One found that eating vinegar was associated with a decreased risk of esophageal cancer. Another associated it with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
Weight Loss . For thousands of years, vinegar has been used for weight loss. White vinegar (and perhaps other types) might help people feel full. A 2005 study of 12 people found that those who ate a piece of bread along with small amounts of white vinegar felt fuller and more satisfied than those who just ate the bread.
While the results of these studies are promising, they are all preliminary. Many were done on animals or on cells in a lab. The human studies have been small. Before we will truly know whether vinegar has any health benefits, much larger studies are needed.
Editor's Note: Johnston's latest research, published in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolismin January 2010, reinforces previous evidence that the acetic acid in vinegar can indeed reduce postprandial blood sugars. According to Johnston, "Two teaspoons of vinegar effectively reduced PPG (after meal blood sugar). This effect was most pronounced when vinegar was taken with the meal as compared to 5 hours before the meal." Just two teaspoons of vinegar, taken with a meal, may help you keep better blood glucose control.
How Should Apple Cider Vinegar Be Used?     Since apple cider vinegar is an unproven treatment, there are no official recommendations on how to use it. Some people take two teaspoons a day (mixed in a cup of water or juice.) A tablet of 285 milligrams is another common dosage.

UNCLE JIMMY

UNCLE JIMMY

I wrote this, but I guess it didn't fit; so it got chopped out at the beginning.

G Grandma Evelyn is known by some of us as "eread" on the old Cooking.com site.

She wrote the article, and asked me to pass it on to her dear friends here!

She is a severe diabetic, and she is feeling more under control and keeping her glucose levels in tact.
She got her 6th Chemo Session for her cancer, and the Dr's all are amazed at how wonderful she looks, and feels. She goes for a CT scan at the oncologists next week, and she is anxious to see if her cancer is slowed down at least, and that no new growths appeared since last CT scan.

UNCLE JIMMY

UNCLE JIMMY

I am adding this. Evelyns test of glucose etc. She seems to really have more stable control with her readings.
I know earlier in talking with her, she explained to me the signs (her signs) of hor her lip tingles and her tongue got numb, and then she knew right away that she had to sit down, or stop driving, and eat some carbs; because her glucose was way too low. Then she told me how she would take a few crackers, and but as a must, made sure she took protein with it; like a piece of cheese.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My HbA1c was only 5.6 which means my glucose control over the last few months averaged about 115 a day...a non-diabetic reading. I believe this first time "normal" in almost 40 years is from the apple cider vinegar I faithfully take daily with any carbs... explained below. My comments are in red below. Feel free to share with anyone you know who has diabetes...or cancer as cancer loves sugar and this may help to keep the sugar in your system way down and give the cancer a hard time....they may even call me. Please copy and paste the info so my email doesn't travel with it to the wrong unknowns.
The chart below shows what the A1C means in terms of average blood glucose levels. An average blood glucose of 150 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) translates into an A1C of about 7. (This is the goal for someone with diabetes and indicates that their daily glucose readings have averaged 154.5. Anyone testing, on a fast, over 126 on a glucose test is considered a suspected diabetic)  This is above normal, given that a diagnosis of diabetes is usually given when blood sugar levels reach about 126 mg/dL. By the way, my glucose was tested that day about 1:10 p.m. after I had eaten breakfast and a light lunch (which included my sugar free drink including a tbs.+ of apple cider vinegar. I had that drink for breakfast, too.) I was not even fasting!  I stuck my testing strip in the blood before the band-aid was put on and got a low of 70 but when the results came back, they got a reading of 56-LOW-ALERT! Their reading was probably more accurate as I was feeling the low including a pins and needles lower lip. (My three HbA1c tests done 2012-2013 averaged 6.8% which was wonderful considering I am a diabetic.) But 5.6 is unbelievable!
     On Monday, May 5, 2014, Dr. Chu, my oncologist/hematologist as a favor to me and because cancer loves high glucose readings, checked mine and called me this morning. My glucose HbA1c result was 5.6!!!! This even includes high readings for 3 days  every 4 weeks when I take a.m. and p.m. steroids on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th days after chemo. My 5.6 falls in the range non-diabetics get!!! My few month's daily average were around 115. Imagine if I didn't have to take those steroids??? Now I am sharing this with you in case you have or  know of someone with diabetes. I think it has come this low, in part,  because of all the supplements I have added to my daily pill holders, and I have shared them with you below. These  help the body to use the insulin and help glucose metabolism. ....BUT.... I have found the BIGGEST change came after taking a rounded tbs. of sugar free apple cider vinegar in a sugar free drink with every carb meal or snack. This is definitely working for me. I have not changed my diet or any exercise...which is basically walking up and down the supermarket aisles at a fast clip...even the dog food aisle although I don't have a dog as that aisle requires no stops to slow me down! There's more about the apple cider vinegar below.
Here is a list of everything I am taking that relates to glucose control. Many of these and the other supplements I take help in other areas as well (arthritis, brain function, cancer, cell damage, blood pressure, cholesterol, fat, carbohydrate and calcium metabolism, heart, nervous system, liver function, energy metabolism, eyes, etc.). (Make sure you check out Turmeric and Mushrooms!)
   1.  For the last couple of years I have been taking cinnamon capsules-500 mg. each twice a day) This supports sugar metabolism.
   2.  Since last Fall I have been taking 3 different mushroom extracts and recently added a 4th which help regulate insulin. I take 500 mg. a.m. and again p.m. of the 3 and 600 mg  a.m. and p.m. of the 4th. Check out this chart: I have placed a * above the four I am taking and 3 help diabetes:
                                                       *      *   *  *:Health Apps for Mushrooms I buy them either from Swanson's or Puritan's Pride when they have their Buy 1 Get 2 Free or Buy 2 Get 3 Free sales. Swanson has sales, too.
3.    For over almost 2 months I have been taking a rounded tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar with every meal containing carbs or if I have a carb snack. I fill a peanut butter jar with the apple cider vinegar and add a sleeve of Crystal Light or Walmart's sugar free powdered drink mix. This I add to my cold green tea that I have added sugar free lemonade (my favorite) or other flavor. I make 2 liters at a time using 8 green tea bags + 2 regular tea bags. I add enough filtered water to the brewed tea to make the two liters. (The green tea acts as a diuretic and I no longer take Lasix with potassium to reduce fluids. My legs are skinny!) All I do is pour the prepared cider vinegar into a glass and add the drink which mixes it up as I pour. I have NEVER had an HbA1c reading this perfect in almost 40  years as a diabetic! The vinegar is supposed to keep much of your load of ingested starches from turning into glucose that gets into your blood. By the way, the addition of an acid such as vinegar or lemon to a potato salad, for example,  both reduces that starch load to you and helps to retard spoilage of the salad, esp. if you're taking it outside on a hot day. People have experienced weight loss from taking the apple cider vinegar. I do not work for the apple industry! LOL! Here are HbA1c readings and their equivalent to a glucose test. The HbA1c is a measurement of one's control over a few months. The glucose test is a test result of your immediate reading at the time of testing based on what you have or haven't eaten within 2 hours, exercise done, etc. My 5.6 falls between 95.5 and 125...or about 115. A normal range is usually 70-125. I am thrilled with this news! Thank you, Dr. Chu, for offering to test me! You made my day!
A1C Average Blood Glucose
5 95.5
6 125
6.5 139.75
7 154.5
8 184
9 213.5
4.   Alpha Liporic Acid-600 mg 1X daily-Helps metabolize sugar especially in the muscles where it promotes energy.
5.    Biotin-Ultra-7500 mcg 1X daily-Metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
6.   Magnesium (Albion Chelated Multi Mineral-I take 2 a day. This capsule contains more than magnesium.
7.  Turmeric (Curcuma longa) (rhizome) 720 mg. each-1X a.m. 1X p.m.
UNCLE JIMMY
UNCLE JIMMY
I got another call today from "Great Grandma Evelyn" today; and AKA "eread" on the old c.com forum.
Here is the Great News...
,,,,,,,as I have been blessed! Thank you, God, for hearing my prayers and the prayers of those who are praying for me.
Dear Family and Friends,
    Today was one of the best days of my life. I had an appointment with Dr. Chu, my very caring hematologist/oncologist, to find out the results of last Friday's PET/CT scan. Traci met me there for support. The wait is always scary.
    My last PET/CT was 98 days ago on Feb. 21st. Dr. Chu had very positive news. I have many cancerous tumors but they only report on the two largest ones.
    The one that was 1.4 cm decreased to 1.3. This may not seem like much but it should have grown larger! The SUV, which measures the metabolic activity of the cancer growth itself with this tumor, went from 7.88 to 4.56!
    The second tumor went from 1.5 cm X 1.2 cm to 1.5 cm X 1.1 cm. The SUV on this one went down from 9.40 to 4.71....HALF the rate!!!! Incredible!
    There were NO NEW CANCERS seen this time.
    Dr. Chu, again, as he had in Nov. called me his "Little Miracle".
    He told me to continue taking all the supplements I have researched and take faithfully daily....now 23 different ones a day (some twice a day) plus apple cider vinegar to keep my glucose in a normal range as cancer thrives on glucose.
    He said that I should write a book and he and I will publish it! He kept looking at the report on the screen shaking his head in disbelief!
    As he left he gave me a great big hug and said that I was his hero! Actually, I feel that HE is MY hero as he is very caring and supportive of all the supplements I am trying. He takes time to answer my questions.
    If you know of someone with cancer, I would willingly share my list of supplements in hopes that it may help their chances of living longer.
   Thank you ALL for your prayers and words of encouragement and support.
   Thank you, my former students and parents, who have written so many kind words and memories in emails and on Facebook. They have brightened my days and I live to hear that each of you is happy and successful!
   And thank you to my wonderful dear late friend, Muriel, who convinced me to buy a computer when I was 60 for, without one I would not have been able to research all I have and probably wouldn't be here today.
    I get another round of chemo tomorrow. The Alimta is still working beyond the time it does for most patients. The chemos I take can cause leukemia and other cancers down the road but, for now, I am thankful for every extra day God gives me. He has given me many hurdles but he is always there to help me get over them.
                        Love, thoughts and prayers,
                        Evelyn (Mom, Grandma, Aunt, Cousin, Friend)
Please tell her I say, "Hey!", and she is an inspiration to me. She continues to be in my thoughts and prayers daily.
It is with sadness and plays heavily on our hearts.
Our Cooking Friend Evelyn Read passed away after her battle with cancer, diabetes, and other complications.
Her obituary is pending at the Mangano Funeral Homes in Middle Island NY.
This was placed on her Facebook page a little while ago.
God Rest her Soul!
