DD#1, our son-in-law and two grandchildren are coming from Indy area for a short 3-day visit over Thanksgiving. It'll be a whirlwind visit but we're happy for anything we can get!

I've been emailing back and forth with our 10 year old granddaughter to decide upon the menu.

We'll be having turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, green beans, green bean casserole and orange Jello cabbage/carrot/pineapple salad. Dessert will be apple pie and (store bought) chocolate cream pie. All is by request by GD and her brother.

I asked if she wanted the Brussel sprouts. She answered, "Is that the one with the bacon? How about we just have bacon and hold the sprouts?" Hahahaha

Dane & SIL will be golfing and watching the Lions play on Wednesday, golfing on Thursday and watching the parade on TV, and Friday will be another time on the links before they have to head back to the airport to fly home Friday evening. I sure hope the weather holds for us and we don't have rain. Everyone keep their fingers crossed!

Sounds like a winner Beth.

Cassie has to work on Thanksgiving so I am going to make a turkey dinner for her on Sat, her day off. Meanwhile tonight Charlie and I are having Thanksgiving dinner with my nephew at his church and then at my sister's on Thanksgiving day.  I asked if she wanted me to bring anything.  She was joking when she asked me to bring the green bean casserole but I said I would. It's easy. For our own dinner, I am going to try a combination of recipes from Alton Brown and Martha Stewart to try a green bean casserole that does not use canned onion rings nor cream of mushroom soup.   My tentative menu, along with the casserole, is turkey, gravy, cornbread stuffing, cranberry chutney (with onions, pears and apples) sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, bread rolls(from frozen) and pumpkin pie with pecan praline topping.

Norm, the crispy shallots Imelda makes are really good on a casserole.  I had difficulty figuring out how to make them.  Sliced shallots get put into cold oil and then heated to about 350°.  Be sure to remove when light brown because they continue to get color when out of the oil.  How do I know this, you might ask?  Comes from ending up with black crispy shallots more than once....LOL

It sounds like you and Charlie will definately have your fill of the traditional Thanksgiving offerings. With all those places to go, as well as cooking at home, you will have the opportunity to have some of everything without stuffing yourselves.

I did end up buying some cranberries - I'll grind some for cranberry relish and use the rest for a whole berry sauce. I don't think anyone eats more than about a tablespoon of each, but it's so traditional to have with turkey that I'm afraid we'll miss it if it's not there. I can make pumpkin pie and pumpkin roll at another time so I don't think I'm going to do that since the request is for apple pie and purchased chocolate pie. I'll probably get some dinner rolls from Fresh Market-the kids like the herb knot rolls they sell.

Speaking of Fresh Market....haven't heard from Stephen in a while. Sure hope they're enjoying the new place since the move.

Charlie just said he does not want to go to the church for dinner today. He isn't feeling well.

Cassie said her grandfather wanted cranberry sauce on the table for Thanksgiving even though no one liked it so he put an unopened can on the table each year.  I am trying a new recipe this year. It is a chutney and does not have as strong a cranberry flavor.  It has apples and pears as well as cinnamon, cloves, and onions.

The green bean casserole recipe I am going to use takes onions, panko and flour and baked until golden.

A 21 Lb Butterball turkey....
Tina makes her stuffing...and the kids want Stove Top Stuffing. They like it, so it's easy to whip up.

Gonna have home made manicotti, sausage and meatballs.

the bird / mashed potatoes / candied sweet potatoes / cauliflower / asparagus / broccoli/ Brussels sprouts / Gravy / dinner rolls / salads / Italian bread / pressed butter cookies / cheesecake /
Pumpkin Pies / ...... and misc. foods.

All that to come with 5 to 8 " of snow over wed. and thurs. Nice .... Not for travelers, but Nice to look out the window, with a turkey drum in one hand, and a sausage on a bun in the other.....
And guess what?? .... Don't have to get up early or go to work.
Poor DD does though! She's got clients that need their face made up with mud packs and all kinds of oils. Place she works are greedy owners. Won't even pay the employees for the T-Day.

Boy Oh Boy! Do we have pumpkins galore. DD and Tina are both making pumpkin pies.

DD brought over like 8 pumpkins from her farm. Last night, she had both ovens rip roaring cooking the halves on tray's to make fresh from scratch pumpkin filling.....

I told the girls...way way too much work, but no, they want fresh pumpkins filling.
Would you believe, DD saved all the seeds. I opened the fridge, and there was a container with the slimy seeds. I guess she is going to salt them and roast them in the oven.
If they are in there when Saturday comes around... i'm gonna flip them outside for the squirrels and the birds....
Oh Well!

Daughter Maria is going to make a cranberry apple sauce.... we shall see!

I only like the jellied cranberry sauce. Can'd stand the skins on the berries from the fresh cranberry sauce mixes...

I made a fresh cranberry relish - used the Kitchenaid grinder attachment to grind 1/2 bag of cranberries, 1/2 a Granny Smith apple, 1/2 a naval orange with the skin peeled off to grind, too. I added about 1/2 c. of walnuts and 1/2 c. sugar.

The other half bag of cranberries got boiled with 1/4 c. water & 1/2 c. sugar. I chopped the other half apple and added that to cook down. I cut the segments out of the 1/2 orange that I'll add after it's cooled completely ~ or just before we put it on the table to eat.

DD & I each eat about 2 tbsp. of each with our turkey...but what you gonna do? You can't make just 1/4 c. of the stuff.

Sounds like something my brother ( rest his soul ) made one thanksgiving.
He used apples, and he also added pineapple chunks.
He had raisins in it too..... He made a gallon of it.
Poor kid.... he and his wife were the only ones that ate it. 18 people for dinner too!

You know what Beth? They sell those orange segments canned. I think they call it mandolin oranges. GD loves them.

We have been cooking since 7:25 a.m. ~ Didn't make the pies yesterday so we had to get them going first thing this morning. GD (10 yr. old) helped make the apple pie and rolled out the traditional 'pie crust cookies'. I like them better than she does, mainly because the taste always reminds me of cooking with my grandma when I was a child.

After the pies Tori had the job of snipping a huge pan of fresh green beans with kitchen shears. Not a complaint out of her! I miss having help in the kitchen....

Looks Good Beth.... What is the little pie for? That's cute!!

Yeah! Great to have help in the kitchen. DD is here doing everything... She cooked a pork shoulder in a marinade of apple cider and spices, in the slow cooker for 10 hours overnight. Darn did it come out great.

The turkey is done perfect.... the leg pulled right off with no force. It is resting covered with foil.

Well... I gotta go hunt down the turkey platter...??? ... Where did THEY put it??? affraid

Hey Beth and everyone. I am here when I can. Went to Long Island to my sister's house. Made cheesecake, apple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie and a birthday sheet cake for m grand daughter. Had to head back to Jersey that night to go to work on Friday. That sucked. We love where we are. Two hours compared to 12- 15 hours from Tennessee to Long Island. Going to California on Wednesday to visit wife's daughter. Well, now you are pretty well caught up on my life. Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'll be back in a week. alive you guys!

Great to hear from you Jetfan27.

And to think. My cousins two boys, just trecked to Murfreesboro, TN, and they said it was a 14 hour drive. They both relocated from Taylor, Pa. to there two months ago. One works in St.Thomas Hospital. They love the area, and The other kid got engaged to a girl from down there. Everyone is happy! For Now!
Have a great time in California. God Bless!!
