There was a recent news report about a house fire here (Orlando area):
"Two little kids were trapped in a burning house in Florida last week, and the smoke was too thick for the firefighters to find them. But the family's German shepherd ran in, sniffed them out, guided the firefighters, and saved their lives."
It makes me want to go to the Humane Society and adopt a dog again. Then I remember I can turn off the lights, check the locks and walk out the door and no worry about being home to let out/feed/etc.
I guess I'll just be glad there are stories like that on the news once in a while.
