1Drink served in a Moskau Mule copper mug? Empty Drink served in a Moskau Mule copper mug? Sat Oct 11, 2014 12:13 pm

Many years ago we installed a fireplace screen in the bar area of a popular Niagara Hotel.  They had two or three long handled pokers which were heated up in the fire, then plunged into a drink that was in the copper "Moskau Mule" mug.  The drink only filled the mug half way, because when the poker was put into the drink it bubbled up.  Drink was served hot then.  I looked up Moskau Mule but I don't think that's the drink that was served.

Anyone have any ideas what that drink was?  I imagine that it's not being served any more, you know, fire, hot poker, booze.............................. a disaster in the making, perhaps? Wink

Lore - I did a quick search and came up with a similar drink, the Moscow Mule....

Here's a link:

All the searches I did had similar ingredients - vodka, ginger beer, citrus of some sort....but all were done with ice, not hot.

But, being way up north in the cold of winter, I can imagine someone got inventive and decided to switch out the ice cubes for a nice hot poker.

I think the drink heated with a hot poker is traditionally called mulled ale.  It can be sweetened and spiced.  Here is a link for that. It says if you add rum or brandy, it is called a flip. Your mule drink sounds like a variation.

This is an old English style pub, the ale sounds about right. Thanks.
