Here is a recipe that uses semi sweet chocolate chips and chocolate chips. Do you think they mean milk chocolate chips for the cookie layer?

Ingredients
For Brownies:
Cooking spray
2 oz unsweetened chocolate, roughly chopped
½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
¾ cup (1½ sticks) unsalted butter
¾ cup sugar
1½ tsp vanilla
½ tsp salt
2 large eggs
¾ cup all-purpose flour
For Cookies:
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
½ cup packed light brown sugar
¼ cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup chocolate chips.
1¼ cups (about 6.5 oz) chopped chocolate candy bars

I would guess the chocolate chips are semi-sweet (regular ones) and the candy bars are milk chocolate.

But that's just my guess.

I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. I'd use whatever I had in the pantry.

For the brownie part it says semisweet chips but for the cookie part it just says chocolate chips.

Hey Bug, I'd use semi-sweet chocolate chips and milk chocolate bars for the cookies as Beth suggested.  I have a cookie recipe that calls for unsweetened, semi-sweet and milk chocolate in a near flourless base. And when I see "chocolate chips" in a recipe, I always assume it's semi-sweet ones which to me, are what chocolate chips are.
