My husband's car that he uses for work bit the dust. It needs a new trans. The car is a 2006 Kia and looked brand new when he got but 40 miles to work on the freeway each way took its toll. The front end is bashed in from a wood pallet that flew off a truck and hit it. The clear coat is peeling off all over so it it not worth fixing. A new trans is $2200. So we have to figure out a way to get him another car. Not a new one but a used econo-box. I suppose we will have to make payments which I haven't done in 20 years and would really be a strain on us. He could sell his 1990 928 but that is his baby and I won't let him do it. So right now he is using my car. I feel trapped even though I really have no where to go. Our roomie has a 2007 Jaguar but it needs a new trans. She has been nursing it along until she comes up with $4000 to fix it, so I really don't want to ask her to drive me around. By the time she gets up and is functioning it is 6PM anyway and my husband will be home then.

I know how you feel being home without a car....even if you have no place you need to go, you feel so helpless for some reason.

Dane is still in Ohio finishing up some maintenance on our house there. He has my car. We drove north together, he dropped me off in Indy so I could stay with our grandchildren for a couple weeks and he continued on to Ohio to get some work done. After my 2 week stay in Indy I flew home and have been here with our golf cart for transportation.

It's not bad, unless I really want to go someplace and it's pouring. Then it's crappy.

But usually I just decide to skip the trip unless it's absolutely necessary.

Our car took a conniption fit today. Ha Ha Ha ....
Tina was on way to her Dr. Appt. for 9:30, and after that she was to pick me up for My Dr. Appt at 10:45.
She called me on the cell....said,"The car won't shift up, and the ABS and ASR lights are lit on the dash.

She was finished, and stearted the car, and all normal again. No lights and no unusual operation.

I had the next door neighbor run me up to my Dr's for my appointment. I would cancell, but I needed Blood work done.

I checked the codes imbeded with the OBDII code reader...and PO500 said I need to check the front left wheel speed sensor. Then there was a PO700 Transmission code. There are some checks I can perform, but limited. That is a stealer dealer hook up to Mercedes S T A R program diagnostic reader. I don't have 32,000.00 for one of those systems.
So it looks like a trip to a shop that can hook up into the system.
It's not like years ago when you could rebuild a 350 trans for 59.00 worth of parts.

Isn't that the truth! And you are right about the diagnostics: everything has to be checked by a computer. Cha-Ching, Cha-Ching!

My mom didn't have much of a sense of humor so she was dead serious once when I heard her say "Cars know when you have a little extra money"

Now last evening, and this morning, the car functions normally.

No lights on the dash, so it may just have been a car computer glitch. OR.... a Spinning wheel WIL set the ASR ( Automatic Slip Regulation ) and I think what happened, is, they are doing water main replacing on our streets, and Tina spun out one wheel ( rear wheel drive ) on a patch of sand  / dirt / gravel, and it somehow locked in the ASR mode. When that happens, the Adaptive Steering Regulation makes the steering wheel stiffer to turn. She said the trans would not upshift past 2nd gear, so that was the explanation of the stiff steering.
What they call that in Auto Jargon, is The vehicle is in the "Limp Mode".
It is one of those things that usually a shut off of the car, and a restart will reset to normal.
Apparently that worked. So Far!....
The vehicle is a 1997 Mercedes Benz S320 with 197,000 miles Fuel Avg 27 mpg is not bad.
Cosmetically it is OK but a few rust spots that I will fix. The car owes me Nothing. Everything is functional too.
Paid 15,900.00 when it was only 4 years old. It was with a problem that no mechanic could pinpoint, but I took a chance, bought it and luckily found the problem, and fixed it. The car was 62,000.00 brand new. Quite a bargain...LOL...

Why is it, Jimmy, when I know you're Italian ~ that I think you're speaking Greek when you try to explain car stuff ?????

LOL

That's why I got married when I was 18 years old....so Dane could take care of any car I wanted to drive!

I guess it's because most of todays cars have all the lights to warn drivers to get it checked, or check items the owner can check, and knowing the alert symbols is sometimes a good thing.

i.e .... Tina calls me on the cell,...:"honey, the light came on the dash!"...I said what light?" ...she said the thing that looks like a windshield with wipers on it, but I checked the wipers, and they work. I told her, stop at K-mart, and pick up a gallon of windshield washer fluid. Oh, she said, "How Cute!"
But all the while, she was in a panic. LOL

I guess we don't see them too often (which is good ), but it's good to know some of them, and what they mean.

I'll bet bugs knows all the jargon. Her husband is a mechanic.
Unless he doesn't talk about stuff at home that goes on at the workplace.

I used to know all of the jargon and the parts of a car but I deleted that from my memory when I realized that my DH had no intention of learning about anything I was interested in. I stopped going to car shows and anything else that had to do with cars. 1996 Pebble Beach Concours was the last I went to. It actually was a nice trip. We stayed in some old hippie cabins in Big Sur. We went to a BMW fest in Carmel Valley where my BIL won best in show for his restoration of 2.0 coupe. Listened to Derek Hobbs at an intimate gathering. Talked to some handsome race car driver with a beautiful, tall blonde girlfriend named Yvette. Why is it that these beautiful girls are always named Yvette? We went to a private dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and got to see everything without the crowds. We looked at the famous storybook cottages and shopped on the main drag and stopped to admire a Ferrari parked at the curb with a license plate that said "Principality of Monaco" wondering who's car it was. We also froze our asses off. Carmel has to be the coldest place on earth in the summer. We had a blazing fire going in the fireplace and the heater on.
