I found 2 box of pie crusts in the outside freezer.BOGO thing. Then I forgot about them.

My fav as a kid was my Grandmaw fried pies.I have tried forever to make the same but it is not the same. She fried hers.I do that too.But not just right.

Bet she used home-rendered lard.

I tried to buy some lard but it was NASTY. Smelled and tasted like rancid beef.

I've heard there is a "leaf lard" that is rendered from the inner fat that surrounds the kidneys of pigs(sorry if that is more information than you really needed to know....) that is suppose to be the purest kind of lard to use, especially for fried foods. But I've never found it, of course I suppose I haven't really searched for it.

It's the same as the Crisco we use to use - today it's not the same.

So, all we can do is make that stuff and let our grandkids love it and then someday THEY can say, "This is good but my Grandma's was better....."

They have a company that's been here for ages called Hubig's Pies. It burned down a couple of years ago and they're just gettiing around to rebuilding it in a new location. They make fried pies -- the best! They crinkle with sugar on the outside -- the kind that flakes off when you bite into them like the old glazed donuts used to do. My favorite is cherry, but they have apple, lemon, peach, etc. The day Hubig's burned, customers fanned out over the whole city and suburbs to buy 'em all up -- some idiots were even selling some on Ebay for a fortune. Can't wait to try one again in about a year or so
