I thought I liked Rick Bayless but his cooking has to many''' what the heck is that stuff'''.

HOT out today most likely 90` so I am happy to stay inside.

I've been spending the day canning. Just made 12 pints of chili, getting ready to finish making bread & butter pickles and some kosher dills later today. Tomorrow I'm going to make my white chicken chili, and experiment with how to change the recipe for canning.

It's in the 50's here in Prescott and after suffering with 100+ degree weather it's nice to not worry about heating up the kitchen.

You get better PBS cooking shows than I do, Barb....

There was one Julia show, Baking with Julia, on at noon - the show in her later years where she invited pastry chefs to come to her kitchen to demo their recipes. I like the older shows where she is doing the cooking.

Then there was a baking with Martha.....again, not a fan.

And the final one before the travel shows came on was something about a couple chefs building their restaurant and very little cooking, save for a strawberry shortcake birthday cakes demo where they made cakes for their one year old twins.

Nothing with any substance. boring.

So, I went grocery shopping and strolled around the stores looking for something different. I even stopped at the local Aldi Grocery Store. Amazingly, they had some really fresh and inexpensive celery, cauliflower, baby cucumbers and a really green plantain for $.29 that got me wanting tostones, the double fried plantain chips.

And Jana, had I known you were MAKING bread & butter pickles today I wouldn't have bought a jar to have on hand for munching. My Tony Packo Sweet Hot pickles are my #1 favorite but the b&b are a close second!

I had cookbooks by Mario Batalli and Rick Bayless and could not use a single recipe, they all had locally unattainable ingredients.  Martha's regular cookbook makes such large portions that we never can eat all of it.  Of all the cookbooks I've use, hers has more typos.  Once they substituted Dutch cocoa in a cookie recipe and it didn't work with Dutch cocoa.  It had to have regular Hersheys to rise and not be so thin you could see through it. It took me years to figure out that that was the problem.

Made her mac and cheese once. Nearly had to float a loan to get all the ingredients, got every pot in the kitchen dirty and then we didn't like it and had enough to feed a company mess hall.

The only thing I liked about the Martha program I watched yesterday was seeing Martha has put on weight just like the rest of us old broads.....

I get a kick out of her cooking school show. She does recipes that you'd have to be truly rich to make (like 1/2 cup of saffron in one of her recipes). They're not for the masses.

I watched lots of them Saturday, too, something I rarely do. We have a lot of local ones -- Paul Prudhomme, John Folse, John Besh's Family Table, Martha Stewart and one with Christopher Kimball and that blonde woman. I had to laugh at the spoon banging woman who aggravated you, though.

Napa cabbage?  I think it's got good flavor but milder than regular green. Or, could be savoy - also a nice flavor, not as strong as the green. Both are easy to use because you don't have to blanch as long to get them soft.
