On a wood chopping board?

I am quite happy with my 2 rubber cutting boards. I have a back-up pressed wood cutting board. It is an Epicurian and was kind of pricy and some bamboo cutting boards that came free with some Christmas dry salami gifts.

Theoretically, I'd probably spend $100 on a super one.

Realistically, now that Brian has retired, I would say I didn't need another one.  Laughing

I've got two white plastic ones that are flat on one side and have a "drip ring" around the edges on the flip side.  One is about the size of a wide legal page, and the other is probably 12 by 18 inches.  I like these 'cause I can throw them into the dishwasher when I'm finished with them (though I often disinfect them in the sink if I want to re-use 'em while cooking; I've also been known to flip one over so I can use the other clean side).  I also have a regular size wooden one (old) that I rarely use but would only use it for veggies.

And I've got a huge wooden one with rounded corners and rounded edges that I use only for baking.  I also occasionally pull it out to act as a place to put hot pots, casseroles, etc. in lieu of a better place if the stove is occupied or if the burners are still hot (I have a gas stove).

But I've got to say that I am always attracted to cutting boards I see in catalogs or online...

Just remembered that I have two small white plastic ones with a hole in them that hang on the pot rack over my island -- I call them bartender cutting boards as I use them to cut up lemons, limes or oranges for cocktails, but I often grab one of them if I just want to peel some garlic or something small.  They also go in the dishwasher so I love them (I'd put the turkey frying pot in the dishwasher -- no lie -- if it would fit)!!

I have no desire for another wood cutting board....

I much prefer the less expensive plastic or whatever, and even those "4-in-a-pack" disposable ones.  They all go into the dishwasher or into the sink with a splash of Clorox and when they get cut marks in them I toss 'em and go buy new.

I guess I'm just too cheap to spend money on something that's too heavy for me to drag around the kitchen.

I use the white plastic ones too, as they can go into the dishwasher. I sold my 2 wood ones in the estate sale. So I guess I wouldn't buy another wood one.

If I needed a wood cutting board, I'd buy a good one. I'd probably spend a couple hundred dollars. I have one nice one but it's kind of small. The rest I use are the plastic-like boards that you can stick in the dishwasher.

Not that it matters, but my large wood one isn't heavy -- but it's only about 1/2-inch thick....

sorry not me, I hate those plastic ones.I have 2 ,one large & one medium size. I hate them both. They don't stay put ,they slide all over the place. The knife slides on it. The item I am cutting slides.

I like the solid whack of the wood.I have 2 that are way to big,not heavy.Another medium size that has rubber feet, loved it loved it.It has that juice tray on it. That thing is solid hard wood of some sort ,the only thing is,it has separated just a very little & the seams get dirty.I bleach it but have to go in knife to really clean it good. So I don't use it that much anymore. Darch (who BTW I invited here 2 times:x )said to fill the bottom with some sort of glue???

I have another wood one solid hard wood. Both of those wood boards are from 1980's lol.they both are great. I am JUst wanting another heavy duty wood board with rubber feet. They are easy to pick up & move. I have bought so many $20 boards & they are not worth it.Some kind of cheapo wood.I saw a $90 board at W&S. Man that thing was nice.I thought oh ghezz $90????

Didn't Dillweed suggest a company where everything was handmade from wood? Cutting boards, spoons, utensils etc. He may be rude, but it seems like the stuff was pretty good. I just noticed you said you saw one on W/S for $90 and I was going to suggest looking there and pay up to $100. I got some nice wooden utensils there and they were pricey but I use them almost exclusively now, they are so efficient for mixing things that I barely use my whisks any more.

Re: sliding of the white poly boards.....

I have a couple big white poly or whatever boards with the juice groove cut around on one side and flat on the back.  I use them exclusively for rolling dough....a damp paper towel or dish cloth on the countertop keeps the board from slipping around.  The nubby surface on the back of the board holds the bench flour in place and so they are a dream to roll pie crusts on.

Everyone has their own preference so keep looking for what you want.  I would think if you found a board you really liked you could find either stick on rubber feet or the screw on kind that could be attached to the corners pretty easy.

Dillweed Shocked so happy I don't have to put up with him.He is rude beyond measure.I am so surprised he did not lay into HG>

I use a lot of wood utensils too. They are nice to hold & are sturdy. When I needed to use a GC ,I bought some with Mario Bateli name on them.Boy oh Boy they are the best ever .. I usually do not buy chef name on stuff. This may be the exception.Seems he puts his name quality..very pricey tho.If he has wood boards I need to check on that lol..

Barbara the wood utensils I got at W/S are made by Littledeer and are hand made and designed by an inventor/craftsman who makes each one out of a single piece of hardwood, usually maple. They are anti-microbial as well and are a pleasure to use. They start at $22.99 and go to $29.99 with a whole set price of $99. I love them. I will check out the Batalli ones also. Target had some nice looking wooden tools but they were all made in China and not very expensive -- I don't trust anything I put in my mouth that comes from China.

This is considered one of the best made wood cutting boards.
http://www.florenceadams.com/boos-blocks-cutting-boards.aspx?gclid=CJ7s_93I17kCFY1FMgodXBIA_A

The cutting boards I use are dishwasher safe but mine are too big to fit in my dishwasher. They are used in restaurants where wooden ones have been banned but the health department.
Rubber cutting boards are heavier than wood. My son put those rubber pads on mine to raise it up off the counter.  When I clean mine, I put it in the sink and scrub it first with salt and a cut lemon. I have to turn it around in the sink because only half fits at a time.

Here is a description of one brand that is rather expensive.

The Asashi rubber cutting board is the hardest cutting board offered by KORIN. Despite it's hardness, it is forgiving on sharp knife edges resulting in a longer lasting edge retention. It does not scratch easily, and very popular in sushi bars. New York City Health Departments have banned wooden cutting boards in commercial kitchens due to how wood absorbs water and forms bacteria. The Asahi rubble cutting boards resemble wood in color, texture and softness making them very asthetically pleasing and useful in kitchens.

Made in Japan

This is the brand that I use.

Here is one that looks interesting

Details

Thanks to its strong, synthetic rubber construction, this 12" x 18" heavy duty cutting board is perfect for safely chopping anything from fresh fruit and vegetables to choice meats and poultry, while reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Rubber cutting boards like this one are easier on your knives, as they are softer and more flexible than traditional ones. They do not retain juices or odors and their non-porous, non-absorbent surfaces won't swell or warp over time. Additionally, these cutting boards won't harbor as much bacteria as traditional wooden boards, making them a more sanitary alternative.

Easy to clean and simple to use, this synthetic rubber cutting board is guaranteed to provide you with a long service life. NSF Listed and FDA approved.

I sometimes enjoy the Chew especially when they have guest on that I like. They can be a bit over the top and almost giddy at times. LOL I used to watch them a lot but after we moved, I lost track of TV for awhile.

I have one of those rubbery flat things with a hole that we hang on the pot rack -- I think it's made to be a trivet. Brian puts that thing on the counter under our plastic cutting boards -- it keeps them from slipping. He also puts a thick kitchen towel under one sometimes when he's working on it...

Go figure....lucky you.

I know the Publix here has some of the most interesting stuff - nothing I need at the moment, but good to know IF there's something I need (like when I couldn't find a sewing needle here but had thread) all I have to do is look around.

Publix has a great bakery, at least where my parents shop. Their swirled rye bread is very good and they have some guava squares that are so yummy but must be fresh to be their best. My mom says they make very good subs at their deli, too. I love their tropical chicken salad that has mango and chutney in it.

Yeah on Barb to find some good deals!!! I sometimes think that when we're on a quest for something that God will suddenly place at right under our nose -- has happened to me many times.

UNCLE JIMMY

UNCLE JIMMY

We have a variety of cutting boards.
I like the white plastic one about 16 x 10. It has rubber knobs all on the bottom.

Tina worked cutting meats on the plastic block / tables in the meat rooms at the supermarkets, but a few years back, the had them removed. Only because the knives would chip the boards and the plastic would be in the meat cuts etc.
There is a special disinfectant that they had to use on the boards /tables. The floors and stainless tables and sinks got washed with bleach and power washed. Not the cutting tables. But still... the butchers still splashed bleach when the cutting was closed down at 2:30 pm.
Tina won't cut on plastic. She has it stuck in her head that the plastic chips will be stuck in the meat.

For dough and pastry, we have a big 30 inch x 30 inch wood board 5/8 " thick. It was her moms; with an edge so it won't slide away from the counter edge or a table.

Then... we got the Pig Board. Wood and as a gift from DD Maria for one Christmas. Looks the shape of a pig.
I don't like it. All warped and slides all over. We use it for cheese and pepperoni and salami. hahahaah

When I posted about the Yarnell Hill fire that killed the 19 firefighters, he said it was their fault and they were incompetent. I DID lay into him on that. I was so pissed!

It is nice to not have to deal with some of those people. I miss HG (NOT).
