For everyone who is suffering through heat and humidity,,,,head this way!

We had a record low of 52* this morning....darn cold for July and a record low, as I said. It's only predicted to get up to the mid 60's later in the day. Nuts, just crazy. Last year was the hottest summer in history.

I stopped wearing shoes when I went down to the villa the first of February, only sandals or flip flops every day. This morning I'm thinking I might have to pull on a pair of socks with my sandals....brrrrr. Oh that look would send my Robin into the fashion police for sure! LOL

We're having about 105 in Phoenix and I don't know if I mentioned it, but our A/C went out on Friday. The house got over 90 degrees inside. They won't be able to get the parts until Monday (I hope) so we went up to the mountains. It's chilly here today, at least until later in the day. I'm loving it.

Me, too, B. The heat index temp today was 99. Brian sits outside on the deck under the Blood Orange tree, reads and listen to the radio. I don't know how he does it. But it does make the AC feel great when you come inside!

YOU HAVE A BLOOD ORANGE TREE?????

I love those! The flesh is so pretty and the taste, while definately an orange, somehow specific to a blood orange. I like to use the fresh squeezed juice for an evening Cosmo....well, that's another thread...

Believe it or not, Beth, it was the only plant we had (then it was in a pot about 2 feet high) that survived while we were in Houston for seven weeks after Hurricane Katrina (we stayed in N.O. for Katrina but had to leave after a couple of days when things got dicey and radio was saying it might be six months til the power came back on; Brian's home office was in Houston so we ended up there)!  We probably put it in the ground the following year.  It's pretty big now (maybe 10 or 12 feet high and loaded with fruit, too) though last year was its first year to blossom and fruit.  The fruit were divine -- very sweet like Blood Oranges always are -- but they only had a couple lines of red running thru the orange instead of the deeper "blood" color I'm used to in blood oranges.  The local garden guru in the paper said to leave them on the bush longer but that didn't seem to change the color much.  I'm hoping since this is the second year that the color will darken to more red.

We've going to have a HUGE crop this year, as the tree is truly LOADED with fruit.  And you're right, the juice is absolutely delicious, especially in cocktails (Michelle and her booze)!!

That's one of the things I'm looking forward to when I get back to the villa.  I want to remove some unattractive bushes by the front entry and plant a Meyer lemon and Persian lime tree close together so they kind of intertwine as they grow.  The blossoms always smell so divine in the spring and I like the idea of my own fruit.

Dane is the gardener so I usually just say what I want and he figures out how to grow it.  The herbs are mine but he will experiment on container gardening for stuff to play around with.

My mother's rule was never plant a tree that doesn't give you something, be it pecans, figs, limes, oranges, etc. It was a good rule as you can buy a tree that bears something in almost any size.

Just remember in a hot climate that when something says it grows in "partial sun" that it usually DOESN'T mean it will thrive in Florida's afternoon sun. Morning sun is better and afternoon shade in a hot climate like ours in the deep south for something the tag says will be fine in partial sun. Dappled sun under a tree is good for a lot of things that say partial shade, too. And in humid climates like ours, lots of types of orchids will grow really well hanging under trees like our blood orange tree with dappled sun. Now that we have some shade in our backyard, I've begun buying stuff that will do well in partial sun, as the hanging plants on the fence get morning sun because of the orange tree. I've been having a good time getting some flowers I never could because our yard is FULL SUN!!!!

Also, if you're going to plant any type of tree, make sure you read about whether or not its roots will seek out water, as some kinds of trees (like magnolias) seek out your underground water pipes and will end up costing you lots of money if you plant them too close to water lines. You should get a book on gardening in Florida so you're kind of prepared, especially if you're not the gardener type. Or just start reading some stuff online at least.

Fortunately Dane's brothers and sisters live within 1-1/4 hr. drive and can advise as they all have citrus trees. I never hesitate to steal....er, I mean take what my BIL would offer if he knew I was in the yard.....all the lemons I can use. He allowed his trees to grow too tall and now has to use a JLG lift to pick the top ones. Fortunately he owns one so that makes it handy.

Dane's sister is suppose to be rooting some jasmine and night blooming jasmine for me. I love the fragrance of the jasmine. I also want to start some wisteria to grow on arbors to shade the windows. I love those clusters of purple flowers that hang down.

There's nothing better than night blooming jasmine -- in fact, I almost mentioned it in my message about plantings!  Confederate jasmine is good, too.  And a tree that breaks the rules but smells like that is sweet olive!

I love wisteria, too, Beth, and just mentioned to Brian last week that I'd like to find a place for some in the yard -- maybe on the ugly fence behind our yard. Funny!!!

Yeah, a lot of people top them occasionally to avoid that problem. The thorns on the blood orange tree are deadly so it's not so easy to get up there to pick 'em. That would be something -- topping the tree -- that we hire someone to do. Brian's not very good on a ladder (that's an understatement, for sure)...

Ah, yes...with age comes wisdom...

And at this age I have learned it is just fine to spend the money to have a professional do something like prune a thorn filled citrus tree.

Ah, yes. Wisdom. The last time Brian got on a ladder (which he was forbidden to do when I wasn't home), I had to get two antique arm chairs with cane seats which belonged to my great grandmother redone -- the one he fell on and the one that matched it which also had to be redone in order to match the newer one. And once he was on the ground moaning in pain (he told me later), he looked up and he had re-hung the curtains with the lining facing in so he had to get up on the ladder again. His bruise was the size of Argentina, not to mention his bruised ribs. He's been the love of my life for 34 years but handy, he's not! And he doesn't like ladders either. If only he'd remember that!!!

We were dripping with humidity 2 hours ago, and the outdoors could be described as "Skanky Hot".

Now at 8:21 PM we had a violent thunder storms, and when all just calmed down, the humidity is gone, and the temp is cool.

Just turned off the A/C and have the window fan pulling in the cool air. AHHhhhhhhh!!! Nice.
67 for a high tomorrow! I'll be loving it. A lot!

Just came in from watching fireworks -- local church and our town teamed up to have a block party with fire engines on display and food. They were collecting canned goods and K-3 books and had about a 20 minute display. We stood in our driveway and could see them over the trees -- the church is about 3 blocks, as the crow flies, from our house. We were reminded by the shaking of our house, so we saw almost all of it -- very colorful assortment and real beauties.

Yep, we're getting a cold front, too. Only thing is the rain will get here (raining lightly now) but the cool air will stall. We'll go down to 89 in a couple of days. Whoopie (not!). I keep praying for some early cool weather, as we do some years get a little day or two break in September,,,
