Today I plan to start packing up the items I want to take with us to the villa. As we sorted through things to clean out the house we just filled boxes willy-nilly with this thing and that. Now I need to get those items organized and packed neatly so Dane can put the boxes in the car when he drives down in November.

I'm thinking I need to prioritize and put my most wanted/needed items in the first couple boxes and mark them so I get them in case I have too much to fit in one car load. If I don't mark them, he will just bring what he wants and leave what is heavy or bulky....and I WANT my cast iron skillets for sure. I think there will be some creative box making....

Kids can be SO helpful in their description. My girls found SO many things they made in school....didn't have any idea mom & dad would have saved them. I think they would have preferred we NOT save those old grade cards, but, hey, that's what parents do!

So, tell me.....ARE those lamps "butt ugly"?

Unsolicited suggestion.....

If you don't use or enjoy that stuff, take the time to research and get estimates on their worth. My mom paid to have a storage unit to store her excess formerly prized collections. But she no longer had the room to display them. I finally convinced her to show them to an antique dealer who found buyers for her, and she was happy someone was finally enjoying displaying those old things. She also liked the price the expert was able to get for her.

Aladdin lamps are the ones that bring the big dollars. They don't have wicks but use mantels. The company is still in business and you can still get parts to make the old ones work again.

Here is one I have in the room with me

We always had a filled one available in case the power went out.  It always worked.....

Of course, every once in a while I would look up at it and I had to clean the glass shade....it was like all of a sudden I saw nothing but dust!

I started a small collection of Aladdin lamps when I was in an antique shop with my mom in Arkansas and she saw this one pictured above.  She remembered her uncle had one and that she thought they were so elegant.  I stopped collecting them because they take up a lot of space and i don't have room to properly display them.

Aladdin lamps put out as much light as a 60 watt bulb but also put out too much heat to use them when the power goes out in the summer time. One winter though the power was out for several days and they helped keep the house warm and I cooked over cans of Sterno with a chafing dish.

Boy, those were the fun times, huh?

That's when you hear about others who didn't have the foresight to have a well stocked pantry. I liked having a non-electronic gas stove because I could still cook, make coffee and heat enough to keep the pipes from freezing.

The worst part was playing board games with the girls for hours on end......NO MORE MONOPOLY!!!

When we packed up for the move a while back, there was this 'butt ugly' ceramics piece my daughter made me in school. It always looked broken and horrible. I finally put it in the trash.....then, immediately pulled it out. How can I throw away something she made me so long ago? Not this time.

Boy, I know JUST what you are talking about. I just ran a ceramic mug through the dishwasher to get all the dust off. DD mad it in Jr. high art class....got a pig face sort of shaped on the front. She didn't want it but I cannot toss it. It will be with us in the villa - it's small and will fit in a box and sit on my windowsill. Sat on the mantle here for 25 years.....

There are just some thing you can't part with -- the Best Grandma mug I gave my grandma and received it back when she passed, I don't use it but I can't part with it, because she did. I did sell my other grandma's china cupboard because we just don't have the room here, as well as the china she gave me, service for 12 with all the serving pieces and all my Christmas dishes. There were things I let go that now wish I had back and even had to go out and repurchase a few things that I realized I did use. LOL

Yep, we have what we call a kerosene lamp that my mom had -- one that holds a lot of oil. We tried it when the power was out and boy, you are so right as it put out a ton of heat. Right after I blew it out, Brian touched the glass part and it cracked apart and broke. That was years ago -- we still have the bottom part filled with oil but no glass top. I'm sure it's on his to-do list...Embarassed

If you have an Aladdin lamp, they make two kinds of chimneys. One is for electrified lamps and will break easily when subjected to the high heat from the lamp oil and mantle. Those are made by Pyrex, I think.
