Pineapple plants at Walmart?

Pineapple's growing zone is 9 to 11 and Kansas zone is 6. I don't know what Walmart is thinking and I don't know what I was doing except I thought it would be fun to get one and see how it does.

It is pretty so I can't say I blame you. Try taking it inside near a bright and/or sunny window when the weather starts to get colder, Norm. Stranger things have happened. It just might do fine inside during the winter, as long as winter doesn't last forever!

Glad you have it in a pot, Norm.....you and Charlie will be able to carry it inside before the snow flies!  It will take 18 months for that fruit to mature.....but it will be the BEST tasting pineapple you've ever eaten if you wait long enough.

My friend Lyn has grown some - got three producing plants from the 'mother' plant after harvest.  

It doesn't take much care, actually seems to thrive on 'lack of care'.....only needing a spritz of water once a week or so if there is absolutely no rain.  No fertilizer or anything else needed.  At least that was our experience of growing them.

Yup....that's what we thought! But it's so much fun to watch the silly thing grow and mature without any real assistance. When the pineapple fruit starts to turn yellow you know you are getting close to 'harvest'!

But, like my little Meyer lemon / lime tree ~ you don't grow pineapples for profit, you grow pineapples for the joy of watching them grow.

When I visited Hawaii back in the 90's, I took a bus tour and when we passed a pineapple field the driver said that the plants have 4 crops a year. I guess he was talking about a mature plant. He said the first crop is the sweetest and those stay in Hawaii while the second crop gets exported and the third and forth crops get canned.
