not much mess if you use the cream biscuit recipe from White Lily....

2 1/4 c. White Lily Self Rising Flour
1 c. Heavy Whipping Cream

(I add 2 Tbsp. melted butter w/cold cream)

Mix cream (and melted butter) into flour.  Knead on cutting mat about 3 times to bring together and pat out to 1/2" thick.  Cut into squares with knife or use biscuit cutter.

Bake at 400° for 18-20 minutes until brown.

no cutting in butter/shorting.  no mess to speak of.  easy.  quick.

Make drop biscuits instead of rolled out ones. A lot less trouble from the same dough and quicker, too.

Pillsbury makes frozen biscuits (in a bag) that are good and easy. They take twice as long to bake as fresh but you don't have to make them and they don't have anything in them except the same things in the stuff you use when you make them from scratch.
