The idea, I believe, is to keep the butter insulated and able to be left out on the counter without melting into mush. With a/c on most of the time, my butter stays at just the right softness to butter my toast. Once in a while it may become too soft, but I use it up and then put out another stick.

For me, it would be just one more thing I don't need sitting out.

I made a couple on the potters wheel and bought a few individual ones for dinner parties. They work fine as long as you use them within a couple of weeks.

I used to use one but since I only butter toast once a week, I quit using it. It works but sometimes the clump of butter would fall out of the top into the water.
